Who is the Holy Spirit?

in The Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit: Painting of the Holy Spirit as a dove. When the Bible talks of who the Holy Spirit is it describes Him as a Person and not simply as the influence or impersonal power of God.

The Holy Spirit is a divine Person of the Holy Trinity, a Person who can be tested, lied to, grieved, resisted, insulted and blasphemed.

The Holy Spirit is God Himself, proceeding from God the Eternal Father and the eternal Son of God.

The Holy Spirit regenerates, teaches, witnesses to, guides, speaks, intercedes, searches, calls and directs people into doing the will of God.

When we become believers, the Holy Spirit is sent into our hearts and God comforts and instructs each and every one of us.

As you read this excerpt from the Christian book Letters from Home, contemplate who the Holy Spirit really is and all the wonderful promises and possibilities of living so close to God.

Through the Holy Spirit living within us we can have a direct personal experience of, and relationship with, God.

the holy spirit in the bible is feminine in character so why are you talking about her as being a him. Do I sense a fear of the feminine here?

Hi Tinus,

There are times when I succumb to the ‘fear of the feminine’, but this is not one of them :-)

The question of whether God, or the Holy Spirit in particular, is male or feminine comes down to the way God has chosen to be revealed to us. Of course, God is not male or female in the way that we understand the sexes, but He has chosen to reveal Himself to us in ways that we can understand – through personification and anthropomorphism.

Whether the Holy Spirit is described as a He or She (or in some cases an It) depends on the human languages being used. In some cases, the personal pronouns are male, sometimes female and sometimes neuter. I believe that the vast majority of God’s self-revelation is that of being male, but this is coloured with wonderful characteristics that we would normally consider as feminine, such as giving birth (eg Deuteronomy 32:18) and caring for us as a mother hen cares for her little chicks (Matthew 23:37).

There is so much more to God than being either male or female that I think that He has no problem with using imagery from both sexes in order to help us try to understand Him better. Don’t you think?

It’s comforting to know the Holy Spirit indwells us. It’s sobering to realize all the ways we can abuse It/Him/Her/God/Gift.
